When it comes to fonts you can go wrong really fast. This is probably the most important thing when hiring a designer. Choosing one who has the refinement in typography is how you separate the good designers from the bad, or the people who are designing their own logo from the people who hire out. So, I want to give you a few tips and some good freebies for you to mess around with on our own.

TIP 1: MIXING FONTS

When mixing fonts it is important to use two fonts that are very different. When you use two that are too similar like two san-serif fonts (Arial and Gothom), it will look off and unbalanced. I usually suggest doing a san-serif mixed with a fun script or a dramatic serif font (Gotham and Magnel). If you do want to mix two san-serif fonts use one that is condensed and one that is round or extened as well as change up the font weights. You can also use the same font and just change the weight and size, and maybe even consider italicizing.

TIP 2: SIZE MATTERS

When mixing fonts, its important to use variations in size. Usually (as per tip 1), the dramatic font is larger like the main word of the business and then the simple font is much smaller used below for a subline of some kind. The variations in size bring interest and focus as to what is most important on your design. If you are making a for sale sign, you would put those words biggest in the specialty font and then the rest of your sale information below in smaller text and usually a different complimentary font.

TIP 3: THE THING ABOUT FREE FONTS

There are several sites that offer free fonts. It is easy to get really excited and start downloading all of them because they are FREEE! and who doesn’t love free? But most of them are crap. Seriously crappy ugly fonts that if used, will make your ad, flyer, logo or whatever look terrible. In the sea of ugly free fonts, there are some gems that generally look good in most uses. Be careful as to what you download. Don’t fill your fontbook with tons of crap because you just might use a nasty one and that would be horrible.

I was just talking to my mom about how lucky I am that I get to do what I love everyday (take care of my baby) and design cool things that express my creativity. This may sound weird but I have never felt like I was in my true element until now.The only other time was when I was a cheerleader in high school, I was so passionate about it and I loved being busy with something I loved. Since then I have been searching for that thing that truly fulfilled me. I thought it would be my husband, which did fulfill a different part of my life. Then my baby which has brought so much joy to our family but I think I have finally felt the creative happiness that I have been looking for for so long through design. In the past, I have loved designing but I think I felt empty without the other two things in my life and now I can say I truly have it all.

I chose to do this project because it wasn’t commissioned and I had 100% control over what I wanted to do. Music is my language and I am super passionate about it so choosing some of my favs to make fan art was so much fun. I also wanted to design some popular artists and some not so common, so those who followed my project would discover how great they are too. Well I hope you enjoy the completed Music Poster Project.

This band has become quite popular over the last year with their song “Unsteady”. I have loved this song and several others of their as well and wanted to do a fan poster for them. I loved working with the beautiful foggy forest image and the chunky serif font and I really like how it turned out. This is literally the perfect band for the season; totally mellow and moody for those days spent inside.

I have been really really into this band Young Summer and I wanted to incorporate it into my free fonts post so… each phrase is a title of one of their songs that I love. I know I already posted their “Waves that rolled you under” but I want you to listen to it if you have the time. If is the  perfect fall song! I also wanted to do some experimentation with some colors and collage looking styles. I love design so much because it is full of endless possibilities. Sometimes things work out and sometimes they don’t but its all fun and I am so grateful this is what I spend my days doing. #happydesigner

I wanted my theme to be inspirational since it is suicide prevention month and I have had some friends pass this summer from suicide. Depression and low self-esteem is a terrible disease. Everyone catches it on occasion and for some, prostate purchase it never goes away. My wish is that people can somehow understand how important they are and have a knowledge of Gods love for them individually.

Hey eveybody! Today is a big day for me only because I am living my dream and doing West End Girl full time! I really can’t believe I made it to this point so soon in my career thanks to such a supportive husband. The gratitude and excitement I feel today makes me giggle like a school girl. I have been thinking a lot about the direction I want to go and what I want to do with my business and after hours of convo’s with my experienced friends and taking a ton of advice I think it just comes down to me. I AM ME and thats all I can be and so my blog is going to consist of all the things I love. I don’t want to change much about what I am doing but I am excited to be able to blog more regularly and add more fun fashion posts. As an artist I am interested in anything and everything even the slightest bit creative and therefore my range of hobbies is enormous! I plan to post about everything from my designs, styling, fashion and beauty to my love of interiors, diy, music, creative writing and of course me and my hub. I want this to be a platform where people can just enjoy what they are looking at and get great ideas for their own home or businesses. West End Girl is your one stop shop for creativity. I am always so inspired by music and lyrics and this song really stood out to me this week. I am working on my lettering and calligraphy, see and practicing with some cool lyrics always makes it so much more fun. This particular sentence hits home for me in a lot of ways. I have so much baggage from my past, I would have to pay the 50 dollars plus to get on the plane if you know what I mean. I feel like I have lived 2 lives before the age of thirty and therefore throughout those experiences I have lost much of my confidence, always waiting for the perfect person to come into my life and give me my happily ever after. Being a hopeless romantic and dreamer really made me think that was possible and that was all I needed to be happy. Luckily it was possible, but not until I realized what I had been looking for the whole time was a creative, confident Kirsten. I finally saw that I was worth so much more than I could ever know and therefore I deserved someone who would love and treat me well. The change in my life was all within myself and that is why I feel like I connect with this song. Hope you like it as much as I do.

Nothin like some good Selena Gomez to brighten up the new year. I love her bopper beats and this one has some really cute lines. I was practicing my lettering with some of my favourite lyrics from the song The Heart Wants What it Wants that she recently released. It is totally about JB which makes it kind of sad because he is such a loser now but I totally get it. Well here is a little something to look at for today. Cheerio!
