I love the contrast between these two patterns and how well they go together. You don’t have to match perfectly when choosing pillows, variety and a bit of randomness sometimes makes your couch or bed look best. I think the reason they work is because one is mostly dark with splashes of color, and one is mostly white with a more organized diamond shape. You could pull in accents of blush or mustard yellow or even things out with a grey or tan small patterned or solid pillow.

I put this same pillow in a really monocromatic setting to show you a simpler way to use this pattern as the focal point. Pairing with the two neutral colored pillows but in different scales of pattern still add interest as well as give you some energy to your room. I then added a fun mix of artwork with the photograph, charcoal sketch and pulled in the blue with the ocean painting.

I am a sucker for black and white so the simple “x” pattern was perfect for this display. If you are going to do dark curtains make sure you have a good amount of contrast on the walls but don’t forget to pull in the darkness with accessories and accents around the room. I would put two dark chairs and a light side table or a tan leather couch with dark and light pillow, maybe have one or two of them in this same pattern.

I love so many things about these two images. The brush lettering is really in right now and it brings a touch of moderness to this room. I chose to pair it with the floral watercolor because it adds some complexity and softness without being too contrasting and unbalanced.

I thought this mix was really fun because it puts two cute patterns together in a pretty neutral way. A good tip for pillows is mixing sizes of patterns, if you have too many large patterns it will look like a chaotic mess.

For tables settings, I think it is fun to incorporate different patterns and colors. Lots of times they are very neutral which of course I love but I am really into black and pink right now so mixing the two adds some fun contrast of modern, soft and fun to the table.

Ever since I got back from Alt Summit I have been so excited about this project I have been working on with Minted.com. This summer they came out with their home decor line of artwork, pillows, curtains, lamps, table runners and napkins as well as fabric orders. I have made a cute little store to showcase my favourite things they have in their shop. Since so many people ask me about how I put things together and choosing color and pattern I thought I would put some fun ideas together to help get you just started.
